Overview
Training to become a flight instructor is the first step into commercial flying for many pilots. There are different types of teaching entitlements, which differ mainly in terms of the training entitlements they contain.
The FI (flight instructor/flight instructor) is the only license to conduct basic training for the PPL. Since the student does not need to have any previous experience, the requirements for the instructor's theoretical and flying experience are correspondingly high.
The CRI (Class Rating Instructor) is allowed to do so-called class training such as SEP (Single Engine Piston) or MEP (Multi Engine Piston) training. He shall not conduct basic training or training for airplanes for which a type rating (type rating) is required.
The TRI (Type Rating Instructor) may. Carry out model training (type ratings). This training authorization is limited to a special model or model series (e.g. Boeing 737 700-900 series, A319-321 series).
The training includes both theory and flight training.
Theory training
The theory training provides you with didactic basic knowledge, repeats the theoretical content and combines both areas in the form of sample and exercise lectures.
For theoretical training, we use a combination of face-to-face training in our modern and conveniently located seminar hotel (InterCity Seminarhotel, 1070 Vienna, Mariahilfer Strasse 122 or, if necessary, at other training locations) and computer-aided self-study accompanied by our teachers. Of course, there is also the possibility of individual theoretical training.
There is no separate theoretical examination at Austrocontrol. Rather, a theoretical part in the form of a sample lecture is integrated into the practical examination, in which a training topic is to be prepared independently and presented to the examiner.
flight training
The flight training can be started at the same time as the theoretical training. The scope and content of the training depends on the selected teaching license.
The flight training for the FI (flight instructor/flight instructor) is strongly based on the training plan for private pilots. CRI and TRI training primarily on the aircraft class or aircraft type for which the training is being completed. In all cases, the preparation and implementation of the training, including the associated training methodology, is the focus of the training.
requirements
The exact training requirements vary depending on which teaching license (FI, CRI, TRI) is to be acquired.
A valid PPL and a minimum flight experience of 200 flight hours is required in any case.
duration of training
The duration of the training is highly dependent on which teaching license is to be acquired. While CRI and TRI training can be completed in 4 - 6 weeks, FI training in practice - mainly due to the more extensive flight training - takes between one and three months. The more time you reserve for the theoretical and practical training, the faster you will progress in the training. In any case, we make it possible for you to have the shortest possible training period.
